Schools in the Hatboro-Horsham School District were among several across the region targeted by threatening phone calls Monday morning that authorities say appear to be part of a coordinated “swatting” hoax.

District officials said a call was received around 10 a.m., prompting both Hatboro-Horsham High School and Simmons Elementary School to be placed on lockdown as a precaution.

Officials emphasized that there was no confirmed or credible threat to students or staff, and investigators believe the call was a hoax. Students and staff remained safe inside the buildings, and classes continued, though no one was permitted to enter or exit during the lockdown.

"Horsham Police Department deemed the threat was unfounded and not credible, and there was no safety concern," HHSD wrote in an update. "Based on this determination, law enforcement has cleared the school to resume normal activities."

The incident in Hatboro-Horsham was part of a broader series of similar calls reported Monday across Bucks, Chester, and Montgomery counties. Schools including Pennsbury High School, Council Rock High School, Conestoga High School, and Plymouth Whitemarsh High School were also affected.

Authorities say many of the calls, some traced to out-of-state numbers, claimed threats involving weapons or explosives. In each case, police investigations determined the threats were not credible.

"Throughout the lockout, everyone was safe and school continued," HHSD officials wrote. "Nonetheless, we recognize the impact this has on our school community.  Administration and counselors are available for any student who may need additional support.

"We regret that our school community experienced this event this morning."

Police maintained an increased presence at several schools throughout the day as a precaution.

Swatting incidents involve false reports made to emergency services to trigger a large police response. The practice is illegal in Pennsylvania and can carry serious criminal penalties.

Officials are continuing to investigate the source of the calls.
