As warmer weather and longer days draw more people outside, Horsham officials are reminding residents to follow local open burning regulations to prevent fires and protect air quality.
The Township Fire Marshal’s Office warns that several materials are strictly prohibited from being burned under the open burning ordinance. These include household trash, paper products such as books, magazines, and newspapers, cardboard and other recyclables, as well as yard waste like leaves and vegetation. Burning construction debris, lumber, roofing materials, rubber products, and household furniture is also not allowed.
Residents may still use portable outdoor fireplaces, chimeneas, and factory-built metal fire pits, but only if they follow key safety guidelines. Officials say these devices must be used according to manufacturer instructions and kept at least 15 feet away from buildings or other combustible materials.
In addition, only dry, seasoned wood should be burned to reduce excessive smoke. A hose or other extinguishing method should be kept nearby, and fires must be attended at all times until fully put out.
Township officials emphasize that these rules are in place to reduce fire risk and limit harmful smoke, helping keep Horsham neighborhoods safe as outdoor activity increases.
