EPA to host community meeting on Willow Grove Naval Air Station superfund cleanup review

The session will cover the Navy’s 2023 Five-Year Review and community needs assessment for the former site in Horsham Township

Residents in Horsham Township and Willow Grove will have an opportunity to hear directly from environmental experts as federal officials continue reviewing cleanup efforts at the former Willow Grove Naval Air and Reserve Station.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Technical Assistance Services for Communities (TASC) program is hosting a public session to discuss its review of the Navy’s 2023 Five-Year Review, along with findings from a Technical Assistance Needs Assessment (TANA) related to the ongoing Superfund site.

The meeting will take place on Thursday, March 26, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Horsham Township Municipal Building, located at 1025 Horsham Road.

The former Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base Willow Grove, a long-designated Superfund site, has been the focus of environmental cleanup efforts for years due to contamination concerns, including PFAS chemicals in groundwater.

According to officials, the TASC program is designed to help communities better understand complex environmental data by providing independent, non-regulatory technical support. Residents will have a chance to hear a breakdown of the Navy’s most recent five-year review and learn more about what the assessment means for the community moving forward.

The TANA report, also on the agenda, outlines the types of information and resources residents may need to better engage with the cleanup process and understand ongoing work at the site.

Community members attending the session will be able to ask questions, raise concerns, and gain clearer insight into how cleanup efforts are progressing and what steps remain.

Federal, state, and local agencies continue to coordinate on monitoring and remediation efforts tied to the former base, with public involvement playing a key role in shaping communication and future actions.
