A 9-year-old Norristown child received roaring applause from area residents at a recent Norristown Municipal Council meeting for his recognition as a community steward.

Grayson Anthony McCoy, a third grader at Hancock Elementary School, received a Keep Norristown Beautiful and Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful Steward for Tomorrow Youth Award.

“Grayson is truly a champion for a cleaner, more beautiful community. His enthusiasm, work ethic and commitment to serve make him a deserving recipient of this honor,” said Keep Norristown Beautiful Executive Director Lisa Bobyock.

Bobyock beamed with pride as she presented the commendation last week that spotlighted Grayson as an “outstanding community member” with a “strong commitment to keep their community beautiful and clean.”

“Over the past year, Grayson has gone above and beyond in support of Keep Norristown Beautiful,” Bobyock said during the March 3 council meeting. “He collected over 800 pounds of litter with over 30 cleanups along his adopted roads of West Freedly and West Warren street[s]. His dedication and consistency reflects an exceptional sense of civic pride and responsibility.”

The municipal community beautification program aims to involve area residents in environmental and conservation-related activities. Bobyock said Grayson also volunteered his time helping build rain barrels and operated a “fishing for litter” game at a recent National Night Out event in an effort to inspire “others to take pride in keeping Norristown clean.”

“His willingness to support environmental education initiatives demonstrates leadership well beyond his years,” Bobyock said.

“Thank you … I want to shout out my mom, Danielle. She has been helping me,” Grayson said.
