The Phillies officially announced that J.T. Realmuto returned to the team on a three-year deal Tuesday.
Realmuto's latest contract guarantees him $45 million over the next three seasons, but also includes $5 million in annual incentives, per The Associated Press.
Here's how the incentives break down:
1. $2 million bonus if elected by the fans to the All-Star Game
2. $1 million bonus if selected to the All-Star Game by coaching staff, players or league
3. $1 million bonus for Gold Glove Award
4. $1 million bonus for Silver Slugger Award
5. $2 million bonus for top-10 finish in NL MVP voting
Of these incentives, the one most likely to be reached is the All-Star Game, especially since you really only need to be very good for half a season to be elected or selected to the All-Star Game. Additionally, Citizens Bank Park is hosting the 2026 MLB All-Star Game, which should help Realmuto, who is a three-time All-Star.
Realmuto is a two-time Gold Glove Award winner, but last took home the honor in 2022, when he posted 11 defensive runs saved and a 15 fielding run value, which is a metric that accounts for throwing, blocking, framing, arm and range. Realmuto remains tremendous at throwing out would-be basestealers, but the 34-year-old finished the 2025 season with minus-two DRS and a minus-seven FRV.
It's a similar story in terms of the Silver Slugger Award. Realmuto is a three-time winner of the Silver Slugger, having been voted the NL's best hitting catcher in 2018, 2019 and 2022. But when he last won the award in 2022, he posted an .820 OPS. He's coming off of a season that he finished with a .700 OPS.
The top-10 MVP finish is the least likely incentive to be attained because Realmuto has only done it once in his career, finishing seventh in 2022. Not only did he post an .820 OPS and win a Gold Glove Award in 2022, be he finished with a 6.7 WAR, per FanGraphs. In 2025, Realmuto posted a 2.1 WAR.
Obviously, if Realmuto achieves any of the incentives in this deal, the Phillies will be glad to pay them, because it means he's turned back the clock in a way that very few catchers ever have.
