After losing out on Bo Bichette, Phillies re-sign J.T. Realmuto

Shortly after the Phillies learned they missed out on Bo Bichette, they re-signed catcher J.T. Realmuto.

Ken Rosenthal and Matt Gelb of The Athletic were the first to report that the two sides were nearing a deal, while Robert Murray of FanSided then went on to note that a three-year/$45 million deal was reached between the Phillies and Realmuto. According to Murray, the deal gives Realmuto "the chance to get to $60 million." USA Today's Bob Nightengale says that the new contract includes "$5 million worth of incentives per year."

It's a quick pivot from the Phillies, who re-signed the three-time All-Star catcher within a couple hours of Bichette picking a lucrative three-year deal with opt outs to sign with the New York Mets, as opposed to the seven-year/$200 million offer reportedly presented to him by Dave Dombrowski and company

Across his first seven seasons in red pinstripes, Realmuto has established himself as arguably the greatest catcher in franchise history. However, he'll turn 35 in March, has seen his defensive metrics decline and posted a .700 OPS last season. Realmuto remains tremendous at throwing out would-be basestealers, and his ability to help pitchers prepare for their starts is as good as any catcher in the league. But given both where he is in his career and that this re-signing comes on the heels of losing out on Bichette to a division-rival, this signing of Realmuto will be met with about 1/100th of the excitement as when the Phillies brought him back in free agency half a decade ago.
