Local students are invited to sharpen their chess skills and support a good cause later this month at Jack’s Charity Chess Meet, set for Saturday, Jan. 31, at Hatboro-Horsham High School.
The event will run from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the school’s first-floor A/B open space, located at 899 Horsham Road. Doors will open at 9:30 a.m. to allow time for check-in before activities begin.
Designed for elementary and middle school students, the chess meet offers a relaxed, non-competitive environment where participants can learn the game and explore different ways to play. Members of the Hatboro-Horsham High School Chess Club will host a variety of chess learning stations, including online chess demonstrations, puzzles, chess variants, and hands-on instruction.
Organizers say the goal of the event is to introduce young players to chess in a fun and welcoming setting while encouraging social connection and learning, all while supporting a great cause. Parents are welcome to stay during the event or drop off their children.
Registration is required, and tickets are $10 per participant. Proceeds will benefit the Jack Duffy Empowerment Foundation, supporting youth mental health initiatives. The donation is tax-deductible.
All participants will receive light refreshments and a chess-themed souvenir.
Those interested in attending can register online in advance to reserve a spot. Organizers encourage families to sign up early, as space is limited.

About Jack Duffy
Jack played chess from an early age, and what he loved most about it was the opportunity to engage with someone and help them learn more about the game.
A 2017 graduate of Hatboro-Horsham HS, Jack was President of the National Honor Society and an AP Scholar with Distinction. He studied at Dartmouth College before taking time off to focus on his entrepreneurial efforts. But Jack's brilliant mind was suffering from depression, and he died in 2019. He is immensely missed by his family and friends, who were touched by his kindness, sharp intellect, and unique insight.
