Several communities in Montgomery County have seen a recent increase in overnight vehicle break-ins, prompting local police to urge residents to take proactive steps to protect their property.

In response to the incidents, officials are promoting a simple prevention strategy known as the “9 p.m. routine.” The routine encourages residents to make a nightly habit of checking that their homes, vehicles, and property are properly secured each evening around 9 p.m.

Police recommend several key steps as part of the routine, which include:

  • Lock all doors and windows: Make sure all car doors and home entry points are locked.
  • Remove valuables from vehicles: Take out any valuables or personal items from your car that might attract thieves.
  • Turn on exterior lights: Illuminate your property to deter potential criminals.
  • Activate alarms and security systems: Set any security alarms or surveillance cameras.
  • Secure garages and sheds: Ensure that all outbuildings are closed and locked.

Authorities say that consistently following these measures can significantly reduce the likelihood of becoming a victim of theft.

Residents are also encouraged to remain vigilant and to remind neighbors to take similar precautions, as community awareness plays an important role in crime prevention.

"By consistently following these steps, residents can reduce the likelihood of becoming victims of theft," police said. "Stay vigilant and encourage your neighbors to do the same."
