Students, staff, and community members at Blair Mill Elementary School, located at 109 Bender Road in Hatboro, will come together on March 2 to celebrate reading and kick off a month-long literacy initiative as part of Read Across America Day.
The school’s annual “One School, One Book” program encourages families to share a common reading experience at home and in the classroom.
This year, each family will receive a copy of School Days According to Humphrey by author Betty G. Birney, a popular children’s novel centered on the adventures of a classroom hamster.
Throughout March, students will participate in daily trivia challenges, listen to teachers and staff read chapters aloud, and contribute reflections through a shared class writing journal designed to deepen engagement with the story.
Principal Dr. Elisha Gee said the program helps strengthen connections between students’ home and school lives while fostering a love of reading. Organizers say the initiative promotes literacy, community involvement, and enthusiasm for books among students and families alike.
The kickoff event, scheduled for Monday, March 2 from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m., will feature visits from local community members, including police officers, firefighters, school officials, and area representatives. Special guests will introduce the selected book and read the first chapter to students to build excitement for the month ahead.
Before classroom visits begin, students and teachers will gather for a small reception celebrating the birthday of Dr. Seuss, whose legacy is honored annually through Read Across America. Staff members will wear themed hats in tribute to the many imaginative characters created by the beloved author.
Read Across America, launched in 1998 by the National Education Association, is the nation’s largest celebration of reading and aims to inspire lifelong literacy among children across the country.
