In Upper Moreland Township, Ward Commissioners are elected officials (seven in total) who serve as the legislative body, enacting ordinances, setting policies, and passing the annual budget. They represent their specific ward's interests, overseeing local government functions like public safety, infrastructure, zoning, and trash collection while managing township services and taxes.

Key responsibilities of a Ward Commissioner include:

  • Legislation and Policy: Adopting ordinances, resolutions, and policies that govern the township.
  • Budget and Tax Management: Establishing the annual township budget and levying taxes.
  • Representation: Serving as the direct representative for their specific ward to hear and address resident concerns.
  • Public Services Oversight: Ensuring the effective management of police/fire protection, road maintenance, garbage collection, and parks.
  • Public Meetings: Attending regular, typically monthly, meetings at the Township Building to vote on matters, as described in Upper Moreland Township.
  • Committee Assignments: Participating in specialized committees (e.g., finance, public safety).

Commissioners may also be involved in community improvement projects and emergency operations planning,
