Jefferson Health has announced plans to significantly expand the emergency department at Abington Hospital, increasing its capacity to handle up to 100,000 patient visits per year, up from the current 80,000, according to a report from The Philadelphia Inquirer

The nonprofit health system said the expansion is designed to meet growing demand for emergency care in the region.

As part of the project, the emergency department will be renamed the Goodman Emergency Trauma Center in recognition of a major donation from Montgomery County residents Bruce and Judi Goodman. Bruce Goodman is a commercial real estate developer and has long served on Abington Hospital’s board. Jefferson Health described the donation as a key component of a $30 million fundraising effort to support the department’s upgrades.

According to the report, the expansion will involve reconfiguring more than 24,000 square feet of existing clinical space, along with converting approximately 10,000 square feet currently used as a courtyard and gift shop. Once completed, the project will increase the number of treatment areas from 80 to 116. Abington Hospital’s emergency department also serves as a Level II trauma center.

Jefferson has also announced upgrades to emergency departments at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Center City and Jefferson Einstein Philadelphia, including the addition of a 20-bed observation unit.
