What started decades ago as a small tribute has grown into one of the Hatboro-Horsham School District’s most meaningful traditions.

Eighth-grade students at Keith Valley Middle School marked the 50th anniversary of the Keith Valley Challenge on March 27, raising more than $20,000 for Make-A-Wish Philadelphia, Delaware & Susquehanna Valley.

The annual event brings students together for a day of friendly competition and fundraising, all to benefit children facing serious illnesses. Over the years, it has evolved far beyond its original format. The challenge began as a floor hockey game in memory of former student Billy Whitehead, but today includes a wide range of activities.

This year’s event featured new additions like swimming relays, baking competitions, and talent performances, giving more students a chance to participate. It also marked the first time the challenge was held in the district’s newly opened middle school building.

While the games are a highlight, the day also serves as a reminder of the cause behind it. Students heard from a Wish family, including Laura Wall, who shared her daughter Alaina’s ongoing battle with a brain tumor. Despite the challenges, she spoke about milestones along the way, including Alaina learning to walk last fall.

The Walls are now preparing for their Make-A-Wish trip to Disney World, made possible through efforts like the Keith Valley Challenge.

Students also played a central role in the event itself. One student performed the National Anthem after winning the school’s “KV Idol” competition, while another shared an original poem before the games began.

Now in its 50th year, the Keith Valley Challenge continues to be a defining experience for students in Hatboro-Horsham, combining school spirit, service, and community impact into a single day.
