A 15-year-old bicyclist was seriously injured early Tuesday morning following a collision with a fire department vehicle in Horsham Township, according to Horsham Township Police Department.
Officers were dispatched around 1:30 a.m. to the intersection of Meetinghouse Road and Moreland Avenue for a reported crash involving a fire apparatus operated by the Horsham Fire Company and a bicyclist.
Upon arrival, first responders found the teenage male unconscious in the roadway. Fire department personnel had already begun providing medical aid at the scene.
The juvenile was initially transported to Jefferson Abington Hospital before being transferred to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia for further treatment. His identity has not been released due to his age. Police confirmed that his parents were notified immediately.
Authorities said no other individuals involved in the crash sustained injuries.
Preliminary findings indicate the fire apparatus was traveling southbound on Meetinghouse Road with a green traffic signal and was not operating in emergency mode at the time, as it was returning to the station after a prior call. Investigators say the bicyclist was traveling eastbound on Moreland Avenue and entered the intersection against a red light when the collision occurred.
Police also noted the bicyclist was wearing headphones or earbuds at the time of the crash.
Officials added that the fire vehicle is equipped with a forward-facing dash camera, which captured the incident in its entirety.
The crash remains under investigation.
