Plans to open a recycling center in Montgomery County are taking shape after officials authorized the advertisement of a request for proposal last week.
The request for proposal approved sought “design consulting services for a dedicated recycling drop-off center to improve accessibility and expand recycling opportunities to include curbside materials, electronic waste materials and other recyclable items.”
“Such a facility would streamline the recycling process, enhance convenience, and reduce waste,” the request for proposal states.
The proposed facility is slated to accept cardboard, computers, glass, metal packaging, plastic, scrap metal, televisions, textiles, as well as possible “organic yard and food waste.” The site would also permit “high volume recycling” efforts, according to the request for proposal.
“It’s something that our residents across Montgomery County have asked for and wanted for a very long time,” said Montgomery County Commissioners’ Chairwoman Jamila Winder.
Montgomery County’s Household Hazardous Waste Collection Program will host six collection events from April to October where area residents can dispose of batteries, gasoline, lawn chemicals, paint, and oil in an environmentally friendly manner. Visit montgomerycountypa.gov to learn more.
Winder stressed that “demand continues to be incredibly high” as officials mulled the need for a yearround option. She added the county is working to secure grant funding through the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection to cover 80 percent of the project’s funding requirements, per the request for proposal.
Additionally, the procured services would cover an “operational and business plan” for the proposed venture. However, there’s “no obligation to the county to fund proposals resulting from [the] RFP.” While specifics associated with the proposed project were unclear it’s unclear, interested firms have until 10 a.m. on April 17 to submit bids, according to the county’s procurement office.
“This [Recycling Drop-Off Center] would provide one location where our residents can recycle a wide range of items that are otherwise hard to recycle,” Winder said.
