It was a dramatic finish at Crawford Stadium Saturday as Lansdale Catholic senior quarterback Yeboa Cobbold Jr. delivered when it mattered most.
After a would-be 54-yard touchdown pass was erased by penalty, Cobbold Jr. kept the drive alive with a clutch 25-yard scramble on 4th-and-15, according to a gameplay report from The Mercury. Six plays later, he broke free for a 25-yard touchdown run that lifted the Crusaders to a 21-17 victory over Hatboro-Horsham.
Cobbold Jr., an Akron commit, ran for 143 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries, spearheading a ground attack that totaled 270 yards, per the report. His decisive score came with 1:21 left, and the LC defense sealed the win on the next series by forcing an incompletion on 4th down.
“It’s all about the guys up front,” Cobbold Jr. told The Mercury. “If the guys up front don’t get that push, that play doesn’t work.”
The Crusaders (2-1) overcame five turnovers — three interceptions and two fumbles — as well as three touchdowns nullified by penalties. Senior linebacker Braeden Smith opened the game with a 31-yard interception return for a touchdown, but Hatboro-Horsham responded with a 60-yard TD run from Ty Teasley and a pick-six by Jaden Reyes to take a 14-7 first-quarter lead, according to the article.
After a weather delay at halftime, LC pulled even early in the fourth on a 24-yard scoring run by Nick O’Brien. The Hatters answered with a field goal from Brendan Heaphy to go up 17-14 before Cobbold Jr.’s late heroics turned the game around, per the report.
Hatboro-Horsham (0-3) extended its losing streak to five games despite a strong defensive effort and Heaphy’s work as both quarterback and kicker.
The win gave Lansdale Catholic a bounce-back performance after falling to Father Judge last weekend in Ocean City. The Crusaders now prepare for Philadelphia Catholic League Blue Division play, opening at Archbishop Carroll on Friday. Hatboro-Horsham will seek its first win the same night against West Philadelphia.
