An employee of Abington Jefferson Hospital has been accused of stealing a patient’s debit card and using it for fraudulent purchases, according to police.
On Aug. 4, around 10:51 a.m., the Abington Police Department was contacted by the victim’s son, who has legal power of attorney for his elderly mother, to report that his mother had been a victim of fraud.
The victim’s son told police that his mother, who is 85-years-old, was admitted to the hospital for approximately three to four days, according to police. During her stay, his mother’s credit card was stolen and used to make several transactions.
On June 6, two transactions were made as a payment for traffic citation in the amount of $102.75. According to documents, the payment was made as part of a payment arrangement with a Montgomery County court under the name Commonwealth vs. Kornegay, Amira.
Another purchase was found to be made on Klarna in the amount of $331.08 for a pair of sneakers that was delivered to the 1600 block of N. 8th Street, according to police.
Kornegay, 28, of Norristown, is an employee of Abington Jefferson Hospital assigned to the Environmental Services Department. Kornegay was working at the hospital all three days that the victim was a patient there (June 3, June 4, June 5). The 1600 block that the sneakers were delivered to is a confirmed address of Kornegay, according to police.
The victim’s son told police that he did not know Kornegay and she did not have permission to use the credit card, according to police.
Kornegay is being charged with a felony: identity theft.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Sept. 4, 2025, at 1:30 p.m., before Judge John D. Kessler.
