Jefferson Health, one of the region’s largest healthcare networks, announced this week that it will lay off between 600 and 700 employees, about 1% of its workforce, amid mounting financial challenges.
The move comes after the network reported a $195 million operating loss for the fiscal year ending June 30. Jefferson operates more than a dozen hospitals across the Philadelphia region, including Abington Hospital–Jefferson Health, a major healthcare provider for Montgomery County residents.
While Jefferson has not specified which facilities or departments will be affected, the systemwide cuts are expected to reach across hospitals, outpatient centers, and administrative offices. That means Abington Hospital and its affiliated practices could potentially see some impact, though details remain unclear.
“Like many organizations in health care and higher education, we are facing significant financial headwinds,” said Jefferson CEO Joseph G. Cacchione. “To sustain our mission and continue serving our communities, we must take thoughtful, strategic actions to align our operations for the future.”
Jefferson recently completed a merger with Lehigh Valley Health Network in July 2024, forming one of the 15 largest healthcare systems in the nation. The layoffs will affect employees across the combined network.
Local residents and hospital staff in the Abington area are awaiting more information on whether the changes will directly impact services or staffing levels at the Montgomery County campus.
This is a developing story. Updates will be shared as more details become available.
