More than 80 food pantry leaders, anti-hunger advocates, and community partners from across Montgomery County gathered on Friday, Nov. 14, as the MontCo Anti-Hunger Network (MAHN) hosted its annual Hunger Action Summit: Together Against Hunger at Montgomery County Community College’s Blue Bell campus.
This year’s Summit came on the heels of a lapse in SNAP benefits that affected thousands of households in Montgomery County. Although benefits have since resumed, ongoing changes to federal nutrition programs and new work requirements are expected to leave many residents in precarious situations—driving continued demand at local food pantries.
“It is inspiring to see so many people step up and take action on the issue of food insecurity,” said MAHN Executive Director Shannon Isaacs. “At a time when hunger is rising far more sharply in Montgomery County than across the nation, it is critical that we continue to support our neighbors who are struggling to access enough food.”
Montgomery County Commissioner Jamila Winder joined MAHN and other community leaders at the Summit to spotlight how emergency food providers are adapting to meet growing needs. Attendees participated in policy briefings, county updates, and collaborative discussions focused on innovative, resilient approaches to pantry operations. Breakout sessions explored community-driven food sourcing and guest-centered, dignity-based service models, among other key topics.
MAHN also unveiled newly compiled data on food insecurity and pantry use in the county. The organization reported a nearly 9% rise in pantry visits from the third quarter of 2024 to the third quarter of 2025—an increase recorded even before the recent SNAP disruption.
Feeding America estimates that roughly 85,500 Montgomery County residents are currently food insecure. As federal nutrition programs continue to evolve, MAHN and its partners anticipate ongoing strain on the county’s emergency food system and are working together to support residents facing heightened challenges.
