Horsham Township Police arrested a New York man after responding to a reported mailbox theft on Appalachian Road and locating a vehicle matching the suspect description, according to reports.

Police were dispatched around 1:40 p.m. to the 1200 block of Appalachian Road, where a resident reported that he had just placed a check in his freestanding mailbox when a man drove up and stole it. The suspect was described as a Black male, approximately 25 to 30 years old, driving a black Jeep Cherokee.

A short time later, an officer traveling on Horsham Road spotted a black Jeep Cherokee driven by a man matching the description. The officer began following the vehicle as it traveled east, noting that the Jeep’s Pennsylvania registration was suspended and did not match the area. The driver appeared unsure of where he was going, drifting within his lane and making several turns before the officer conducted a traffic stop near the 100 block of Keith Valley Road, according to police.

Police identified the driver as Mamadou Sall Dia, 23, who presented a New York driver’s license. Officers reported smelling marijuana coming from the vehicle. Dia admitted he had marijuana in the car and handed over a small container.

While speaking with Dia, officers observed an envelope fragment near the center console and later saw mail items partially tucked under the driver’s seat. After asking Dia to exit the vehicle, officers discovered multiple pieces of mail, some opened, including:

  • A piece of mail from Appalachian Road, the location of the original theft report.
  • A separate piece of mail from the 1300 block of Jasper Drive, containing a mortgage payment slip for $3,482.55, which the resident confirmed she had placed in her mailbox earlier that morning.

Police say the recovered checks were not located during the initial search, and the investigation is ongoing.

Dia is facing multiple felony charges related to mail theft, drug possession, and operating a vehicle with suspended registration, among other offenses.

All suspects and defendants are innocent until proven guilty. This story was compiled using public court records.
