The Hatboro Police Department wants to connect with its residents on a more personal level.

For many people, they only encounter police officers during emergency situations or high-stress encounters like a traffic stop.

The "Coffee with a Cop" program, or Borough Blend as it's been called, humanizes police officers and gives community members a chance to express their concerns, ask questions, or simply get to know the people who patrol their neighborhoods.

Police officers from Hatboro will be at McDonald's, 121 N. York Road, Hatboro, on May 21 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. to chat with local residents about any issue they would like to talk about.

Hatboro Mayor Tim Shultz will also be in attendance.

"McDonald's is hosting it, so we’ll be out there with the Mayor," said Hatboro Chief of Police Mark D. Ruegg. "Members of the police department will be there chatting with folks."

By creating opportunities for informal interaction, it's an opportunity to break down barriers and allow for open, honest communication.

Hatboro started these "Coffee with a Cop" meetups in spring 2024 and has used the opportunities to connect more with its residents.

Officers benefit as well, gaining a better understanding of the communities they serve, including residents' needs, perceptions, and local issues. This two-way communication can lead to stronger partnerships and more effective policing.

“We’ve had a decent turnout," Ruegg said. "We’d like to see more people come out. They can talk about some issues or some concerns. I’s a nice, relaxed atmosphere to hear what’s going on."

About Coffee with a Cop

Originating in Hawthorne, Ca., in 2011, the program was developed as a simple yet effective way for citizens and law enforcement to engage in meaningful dialogue in a casual, neutral environment—typically a local coffee shop. The idea is straightforward: no speeches, no agenda, just coffee and conversation.

These events events are now held in cities and towns across the United States and even internationally. The program is supported by the U.S. Department of Justice and continues to grow due to its success in fostering positive community-police relations.
