"Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach him how to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.”

The Horsham VFW Post 9788 recently organized a community service event, led by Vietnam veteran and current VFW member Vince Laurich, where it collected donated fishing rods and taught local children how to fish at Kohler Park in Horsham.

“Today is a day of service for the VFW,” Laurich said. “We came up with the idea to share with the community that we would give out fishing rods to kids.”

“VFW is part of the community, and the community supports the VFW,” Laurich said. “It’s an opportunity for us to give back. And any time veterans are interacting with other people and get a positive response, that’s a good thing.”

According to Laurich, the event is beneficial for everyone.

"Kids got the mentoring they need. Veterans got the admiration they deserve ... kids need all the attention we can offer," he wrote.

Action News 6 was on hand to do a news feature on the event, and saw eight children catch their first fish they ever caught.

“It was nothing but smiles,” Laurich said. “So we’re making memories in the community. It’s pretty terrific.”
