Read Across America Week is an annual event celebrated across local schools in the United States to promote the joy of reading, especially among children. It coincides with the birthday the beloved children's author of Dr. Seuss (March 2). The event is aimed at encouraging children to read more, improve literacy, and encourage a likeness for books.
Schools, libraries, and communities often organize various activities like reading sessions, book fairs, themed dress-up days, and author visits to inspire young readers. The goal is to highlight the importance of reading in a fun and engaging way.
The Upper Moreland Fire Department did its part as Chief J. Scott Bendig and Fire Chief Ed Glassman volunteered their time at several classes at the Upper Moreland Primary School, 3980 Orangemans Road, in Hatboro, to celebrate the occasion.
Not only do the students get something out of it seeing local emergency responders at their school, but it's also an opportunity for Upper Moreland to speak with the youth about opportunities in the police and fire departments.
The Upper Moreland Fire Department was one of several speakers that joined the Primary School and Intermediate School. Volunteers from all walks of life volunteered their time to the children of the Upper Moreland School District.
"Last week, we celebrated Read Across America Week with some special guests," the school district wrote. "Members of our administration, school board, & community visited our Primary & Intermediate Schools to share their love of reading with our students. Thanks to all who joined us in making this week special!"
