Montgomery County elected officials are weighing in on the recent report of vandalism at Upper Moreland Elementary School, including swastikas and other “vulgar words” on school property.
Pennsylvania Sen. Maria Colette referred to the incident as a hate crime.
“I am outraged and deeply saddened by the recent act of vandalism and antisemitic hate at Upper Moreland Elementary School," State Sen. Maria Collett said in a statement. "This intolerable act is not just an attack on a school — it is an attack on our values, our community, and the fundamental principles of justice and equality."
"The rise of fascist sympathies, authoritarian tendencies, and open expressions of hate in our society is deeply disturbing and rocks our identity as a beacon for freedom and democracy," Collett added. "There is right, and there is wrong. Let us be unequivocal: support for Nazism has been, is today, and will forever be wrong and fundamentally anti-American."
Superintendent Dr. Sue Elliot issued a statement Monday afternoon saying, "The Upper Moreland School District is cooperating fully with the Upper Moreland Police Department's investigation of the vandalism at the Upper Moreland Elementary School. The District encourages any resident or individual with information related to the investigation to contact the Upper Moreland Police Department."
According to police, on Saturday March 8 at 11:50 p.m., two subjects in a red sedan (an upper third brake light) entered the parking lot of the Upper Moreland Elementary School from Byberry Road and made their way to the back of the school. They then used spray paint to "tag" the building and playground equipment with swastikas and other vulgar words and drawings.
The vehicle left the parking lot at 12:10 am.
