The Borough of Hatboro is advising its residents about ongoing scams in the area.

PECO has recently issued an important advisory notice regarding scams that are specifically targeting their customers. These schemes involve scammers who pose as PECO representatives and use intimidation tactics to deceive customers into making payments or revealing sensitive personal, financial, or account-related information. The scammers often threaten to disconnect service unless an immediate payment is made.

If you ever receive a suspicious phone call, text message, or email, or if an individual unexpectedly arrives at your home or business claiming to be from PECO, do not share any personal information. Instead, immediately contact PECO’s official customer service line at 800-494-4000 to verify the legitimacy of the communication.

According to PECO, it will never demand immediate payment to prevent service disconnection. Additionally, the company will not require customers to use a specific payment method such as prepaid cards, cryptocurrency (such as Bitcoin), or third-party digital payment services like Zelle or Apple Pay. Customers should always refer to peco.com/payment for a list of approved and secure payment options.

PECO issued the following tips on how to protect yourself from scams:

Never provide your account information. A legitimate PECO representative will already have access to your account details when they contact you, so there is no need to share this information over the phone, through email, or in person.

Keep your banking and financial details secure. To safely update your banking information or make payments, always use the official PECO MyAccount portal or an approved payment method listed at peco.com/payment.

Regularly check your account status. Monitor your balances, payments, and supplier details by referring to your printed bill, logging into your PECO MyAccount online, or using the PECO mobile app. This ensures that you are aware of your account standing and can quickly identify any suspicious activity.
