A high-speed crash believed to have been caused by illegal street racing left two people dead early Sunday morning on the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Upper Moreland Township, according to officials.
According to Pennsylvania State Police, two vehicles were racing at excessive speeds when the drivers lost control and crashed near the ramp to I-276.
The two people killed were the drivers of the two vehicles allegedly involved in the race.
A third vehicle, which was not involved in the alleged race, collided with one of the crashed cars. Two people in that vehicle sustained minor injuries and were treated at the scene, officials said.
The crash occurred around 3:30 a.m. Sunday, prompting the closure of the turnpike’s eastbound lanes from the Mid-County Interchange to Bensalem. The highway reopened around 8:30 a.m.
The names of those involved have not yet been released, and the incident remains under investigation.
