The Horsham Police Department is mourning one of their own.
The Horsham Township Police Department recently announced the passing of one of our cherished alumni, Retired Officer Joseph Rivera.
Officer Rivera passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 24, surrounded by his devoted family.
Officer Rivera served the Horsham community from 2011 until 2020. During his distinguished tenure, he was recognized for his bravery and dedication, most notably receiving a Commendation for Heroism in 2012, after courageously rescuing a resident from a burning building.
Before beginning his career in law enforcement, Officer Rivera served his country as a U.S. Army veteran, deploying overseas during Operation Iraqi Freedom. It was during this deployment that Officer Rivera was unknowingly exposed to hazardous conditions, exposures that would later contribute to a serious health battle, his early retirement from the Horsham Police Department, and ultimately, his passing.
In October 2018, Officer Rivera underwent a single lung transplant due to a life-threatening condition affecting his lungs. After an extended and difficult recovery, Officer Rivera returned to active duty, continuing his service to the residents of Horsham with the same dedication and courage that defined his career. Sadly, the illness progressed in his remaining lung, eventually forcing his retirement in September 2020.
Even in retirement, Officer Rivera demonstrated unwavering strength and perseverance. He fought valiantly for more than five years.
"Honor, pride, and professionalism: Merely a few words that describe Joe’s service to his country and his community," the Horsham Police Department wrote. "Joe, we are eternally grateful for everything. Rest easy, sir. Your memory will forever live on in our hearts."
