While Special Olympics Pennsylvania prepares to host the North America Golf Championship this August, welcoming athletes, partners, and coaches from across the U.S. and Canada, a dedicated father and son from Horsham are already looking ahead to an even bigger stage: the 2026 Special Olympics USA Games in Minneapolis, Minn.

John and Brian Quinn have been golfing together for over 20 years through the Special Olympics. What began as a shared weekend activity between father and son has evolved into a lasting partnership both on and off the course.

Locally, their efforts earned them a featured spot on 6 ABC News.

“It was something we could do together, and we really enjoyed it,” John recalled in the interview.

Brian started his Special Olympics golf journey with a partner playing alongside him. Over time, he developed the skills and confidence to play independently. Today, his father often serves as his caddie, helping him line up his shots and providing support, though they continue to work as a team.

“If we can get him lined up on the tee, he hits it pretty much down the middle,” John said.

Their passion for the sport is evident in their routine. They play nearly every weekend, rotating among three local courses and even competing in state championship events at Penn State.

Next year, the duo will represent Special Olympics Pennsylvania at the USA Games in Minneapolis. It's a momentous opportunity, but not an unfamiliar one for Brian, who has been involved with Special Olympics year-round for many years.

“There’s so much more than just golf,” said John. “They have powerlifting, tennis, horseback riding—a really wide range of athletic activities, and that’s just during the summer.”

Brian, whose personal best is a 54 for nine holes, can be a fierce competitor.

“When someone else hits a great shot, we cheer for them,” John said.

Through their involvement, they've connected with athletes from across Pennsylvania and now, with their upcoming trip to Minnesota, they’re looking forward to building friendships nationwide.
