On Saturday, June 21st, 2025, the Hatboro Police Department launched an investigation following reports of an individual impersonating a police officer during a traffic stop. Authorities were alerted after a concerned citizen came forward, reporting a suspicious interaction that occurred earlier in the day at the intersection of South York Road and Byberry Road.

Through a detailed investigation, officers were able to determine that the individual involved, identified as William McNichol, was not a member of any law enforcement agency. Despite having no official authority, McNichol reportedly initiated a traffic stop in the aftermath of what police described as a road rage incident. He was driving a Dodge Charger outfitted with emergency lighting equipment, which he used to signal another driver to pull over. The presence of the lights, along with his authoritative demeanor during the encounter, led the victim to initially believe the stop was legitimate.

However, once the situation was reported, Hatboro Police quickly identified the act as unlawful and took action. McNichol was subsequently arrested and is now facing multiple charges, including Impersonating a Public Servant and Harassment. Officials have not released further details regarding the victim or whether any additional individuals may have been involved.

The Hatboro Police Department is urging the public to remain vigilant and to report any similar suspicious encounters. They also remind residents that legitimate traffic stops are conducted only by certified law enforcement officers, typically in marked police vehicles with proper identification.
