Ex-ballplayer Jeff Frye took an unprovoked shot at Phillies pitcher Matt Strahm's appearance on social media earlier this week.
On Saturday, Strahm responded. Savagely.
Jeffrey Jeffrey Jeffrey….. why is it always the middle age men with hairlines running away from them coming after us guys with long hair? I get it, your time with hair is limited but jealousy isn’t a good look on ya sir.
Reasonable people can disagree over the New York Yankees' appearance policy, which specifies that players' hair must not touch their collars and forbids any facial hair other than a mustache.
Many criticize the policy, implemented by Yanks owner George Steinbrenner in the 1970s, as an outdated relic of an older generation. They believe that the policy limits players' self-expression, or they simply loathe the idea of an employer regulating its employees' follicles.
Others, like Frye, may see long hair as unprofessional, like the idea of a team's players looking as identical as possible on the field, or embrace the policy because of Yankees tradition.
Still others support the policy simply because it can yield hilarious results.
But regardless of one's opinion of the Yankees' team rules, randomly insulting someone's appearance is out of line. And some free advice: if you're an aging ex-ballplayer feeling a little feisty, you may want to target someone who is less social media-savvy than Strahm.
Here's a recent photo of Frye from cameo.com, for those curious:
Yeah I dunno man, maybe just sit this one out.
