While local officials are still looking into who is responsible for leaving behind six abandoned dogs in cages on Shoppers Lane in Cheltenham Township, the Montgomery County SPCA in Conshohocken is looking for forever homes for the pups.

One of the dogs is an adult Cattle Dog and the other five are approximately 6-month-old Cattle Dogs mixes. The dogs appeared malnourished, and neglected due to their physical condition, according to the SPCA, however, they are starting to get their bearings after some TLC at the SPCA.

The adult was in decent body condition, but the younger ones were all underweight, filthy, and terrified upon arrival at the shelter.

“We do still have the kiddos here,” said Christiana Young, SPCA Shelter Manager. “Two of them were spayed today They all are up for adoption at this point. We’re taking applications currently.”

The dogs are starting get acclimated to their new surroundings after the tumultuous experience they went through on April 15 when a Cheltenham Police Officer found them on the 2400 block of Shoppers Lane.

“They have been really timid,” added Young. “But they are coming out of their shells. They are starting to work on leashes. They’ve never walked on leashes before.”

The adoption fee for the dogs is $84, and that covers all up-to-date vaccines and ensuring the dog is spayed.

If the dogs do not find a forever home from their at the shelter, the SPCA is currently in talks with a cattle dog rescue program to see if they can get them placed into a home that’s more knowledgeable about the breed.

“They are working dogs,” Young said. “They are a high-energy breed that may require more attention than the average pup.”

Who is Responsible

Cheltenham Township Police Department’s Detectives and Animal Control are working with the Montgomery County SPCA’s Humane Society Police Officers to determine who is responsible for the abandonment and neglect of these animals.

The incident occurred on April 15, 2025, at approximately 9:30 a.m., when a member of the Cheltenham Township Police Department was notified of abandoned dogs left in the 2400 block of Shoppers Lane in the Wyncote section of Cheltenham Township.

“This family is receiving the best of care here at the MCSPCA, but we would like to know where they came from,” a representative from the SPCA said.

If you have any information as to who may have owned or abandoned these dogs, please reach out to Cheltenham Police Department or the MCSPCA directly.
