As Veterans’ Day approaches (Monday, Nov. 11), it is an important to remember all of those who have served. When it comes to the Horsham Township community, you’ve likely noticed plenty of our own have worked to protect our country. To honor them, the township participates in the Hometown Heroes program.

The program, which displays banners, two-by-four feet in size, can be purchased to remember any who have served in any United States Armed Services.

Described as a “living tribute” to recognize the community’s heroes, banners have been created for the living or the deceased. Each remembered veteran need only to have a “connection to Horsham.” The township website describes connections as:

  • Attended local schools
  • Relative of a resident
  • Friend of a resident
  • A resident themselves (past or present).

The connection can be (or have been) from any time in the person’s life. At times, the Horsham War Memorials, the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and American Legion Post also may recommend heroes.

Banners are created from a heavy vinyl and are printed on both sides. The photograph of the serviceman or -woman appears with their full name, branch of the military, and era of service (such as World War I, World War II, Vietnam, etc.).

The honorable banners hang in designated areas from May through Veterans’ Day to observe not only the important November holiday, but also each of the military branches’ birthdays, too.

Following Veterans’ Day each year, the banners are taken down and stored, rehung again in the spring of the following year. Currently, the banners hang in four unique locations. Displays exist presently at the Horsham Township Municipal Complex, 1025 Horsham Road, at the Horsham Police Department, also at 1025 Horsham Road, at the Horsham Township Library located at 435 Babylon Road, and at Kohler Park located at 1031 Horsham Road.

Maps and corresponding servicepersons can be found online here. The flags are hung on lighting poles in and around the parking areas and driving lanes of the various complexes.

For more information on the Hometown Heroes banner, review the cover letter available online here. Those with questions can reach Anne Henning Scheuring, 225 S. Line St., Lansdale, PA 19446 or via email at [email protected] or by calling 215-855-1743. To request a banner, fill out the form, which can be printed from the site here.

Hometown Heroes banners are $135 each and can be paid in cash or check made out to “Hometown Heroes.” Those with questions about a banner already purchased can reach out to the township’s Public Works Department at 215-672-6913.
