Hatboro Police Department Chief Mark D. Ruegg said that the incident occurred on Saturday evening at the Pennypack Community Center, located at 130 Spring Ave., Hatboro.
During the incident, several trees were damaged, and not just at the community center. Many newly planted trees at additional locations throughout Hatboro were also destroyed. The trees had been planted with funding from the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR).
The trees were purposefully planted for a riparian buffer at Eaton Park, Hatboro Little League, and at the Pennypack property. Riparian buffers are strips of vegetation planted next to streams.
Riparian buffers have many benefits, such as stream bank stabilization, erosion, and sediment control, in addition to filtrating nutrients and other pollutants, reducing the impact of floods, creating a habitat and food for wildlife and pollinators. Trees can also provide shade for streams when placed strategically.
“The locations of the riparian buffers were mainly selected to help stabilize the streambanks in those areas,” said Ruegg. “The tubing is temporary to protect the trees from wildlife and rough weather.”
The tubes were to be removed by the DCNR once the trees were able to stand on their own. The cost of the damages was not released. The police request the assistance in identifying the two males from residents in and around the borough.
