One 75-year-old man attempted to use at least three area credit union locations to fraudulently obtain a debit card all in the same day, police said.

According to reports, on Sept. 20 at 4:16 p.m., Horsham Township Police were called to assist with a “suspicious male” using fake identification at the Navy Federal Credit Union, located at 314 Horsham Road in Horsham. Bank employes provided the police with a description, reports stated, of a thin, black man wearing a great shirt, seated with a teller.

Upon arrival, police said that they arrived at the Horsham credit union and were flagged down by a bank manager. That manager told police that the same man had entered the Cherry Hill, N.J. branch of Navy Federal Credit Union utilizing a different identification to obtain a debit card. The man then left that bank, without a debit card, police said.

A short time later that same day, the man entered the Bensalem branch of Navy Federal Credit Union with another identification, police said. According to reports, a teller in Bensalem asked the man to be patient, as she left her desk, but the man fled the scene. At that time, a warning email went out to branches throughout the area which included a picture of a fake Virginia license he’d used, police said. The Horsham bank manager said that, as the man arrived at her location, she recognized his image from the email and immediately called police when he sat down with a teller, reports stated.

Horsham police said they contacted the victim of the attempted crime, who said that he did not give anyone permission to use his name, identity, or give them the ability to authorize any transactions with his Navy Federal Credit Union account. While he was an account holder, however, and did wish to press charges, said reports.

Police said that they then handcuffed the man, then identified as Edward Massado, 75, of Washington, D.C. Upon searching his person, police said they located a fake social security card on the man with the victim’s name on it, which police took into evidence.

Massado was charged with one felony criminal attempt to make an altered device, as well as two misdemeanor charges of attempting to access a device owned by another who did not authorize use. One charge of criminal attempt to carry false identification was also filed.

Massado was released on a bond signature following his preliminary arraignment on Sept. 21. He is schedule to face his charges before Magisterial District Judge Todd Stephens on Nov. 21 in a preliminary hearing at 9:45 a.m.

All suspects and defendants are innocent until proven guilty. This story was compiled using public court records.
