The Hatboro Police Department hopes to see a cutback this season. According to a recent release on its CrimeWatch page, the department is saying “No Puffers!” in this borough.
No, the department hasn’t taken a stance on smoking or vaping. Instead, the term “puffers” in this instance means a vehicle.
“It’s a car that’s left running, unlocked, and unattended,” explained Chief Mark D. Ruegg. “Puffers are easy targets for thieves.”
The chief said that, even when you think you are quick, there is still a chance of robbery.
“’I was only away from my car for a minute.’ We hear this often,” said Ruegg. “Whether you are just running in to grab a cup of coffee or warming up the car before leaving for work, it only takes seconds to steal an unattended vehicle.”
The chief noted that some vehicles, with a remote starter capability, allow the car to remain locked, which can be a safer option. Otherwise, he said, the advice is clear:
“Lock your car. Take your keys. Hide your stuff,” said Ruegg. “Follow these simple tips to protect your property and spare yourself the hassle and expense of having your car stolen.”
While the tips sound obvious, the department notes they are often not followed.
“It’s common sense, but not common practice,” said the chief.
As the weather begins to drop in temperatures, these types of thefts are more and more common. With recent car thefts on the rise (see neighboring Upper Dublin Township’s recent warning here), it is best to be safe, rather than sorry.
