Sometimes a project needs the financial push from a larger institution to get or keep it humming along. Money may make the world go around, but coming up with it isn’t the easiest of tasks. Thankfully, the state can step in at times to give crucial projects the push they need.
State Rep. Melissa Cerrato, of District 151, covering portions of Montgomery County including the Township of Horsham, recently announced just such a helping hand in the form of the awarding of several high-profile state grants. Multiple funding grants for local projects will benefit residents of the 151st Legislative District, Cerrato said
One grant originated from the Public School Facility Improvement Grant Program, which was created to provide grants to public school districts and area career and technical schools for eligible facility improvement projects. The program is administered by the Department of Community and Economic Development under the direction of the Commonwealth Financing Authority.
Funds for this grant must be utilized for very specific repairs, which include improvements involving a roof, HVAC equipment, boiler or heaters, plumbing, energy-saving projects, health or safety upgrades, emergencies, accessibility projects, internet connectivity, demolition, or windows.
Locally, there were multiple projects announced aimed at benefiting those in and around the Hatboro Borough and Horsham Township areas.
Hatboro-Horsham School District, Hallowell Elementary School Roof Replacement Project, $575,000
The school's roof is leaking, and the current asphalt shingle-style roof has been determined to be insufficient to prevent the problem from recurring as loose shingles continue to blow off because of high winds. The proposed project will remove the shingle roof and install a new metal roof to prevent future water infiltration. PSFIG funds will be used for renovation and engineering costs.
The other grants originate from the Statewide Local Share Account, created under the Pennsylvania Race Horse Development and Gaming Act. The act provides for the distribution of gaming revenues through the Commonwealth Financing Authority to support projects in the public interest within the Pennsylvania. It was signed into law in July of 2004.
Horsham Township, Emergency Management Vehicle, $76,275
The project will allow the township to enhance its emergency management response and mitigation capabilities. The project will consist of the purchase of a 2024 Ford F150 Responder truck with a storage cap, a pull-out cargo tray, and emergency management equipment. The vehicle and equipment will provide for more efficient and effective command and control or resources at emergency incidents.
Horsham Water & Sewer Authority, Crane Truck Replacement, $175,070
Horsham Water & Sewer Authority's current crane truck is 20 years old and has exceeded its useful life. The crane truck will be used to move and deliver treatment chemical drums, lift sewage pumping stations for maintenance and repairs, and move spare equipment between the Authority's different components such as pumping stations and storage tanks.
"State-level funding is essential for advancing local development, as it helps communities grow and improve without placing added pressure on taxpayers," Cerrato said. "By funding crucial projects such as infrastructure and public services, states ensure continued progress while maintaining lower local tax rates. Congratulations to the recipients of this funding – your commitment is a great reflection on our community."
