We may have had a far longer history of the shopping sales phenomenon known as Black Friday, but the newer additions of a Cyber Monday and Giving Tuesday are much more recent.

Giving Tuesday got its start in 2012, with a simple goal of encouraging others “to do good.” The nonprofit which now coordinates and promotes such efforts, GivingTuesday.org said that the concept was really “born and incubated” in New York City. The agency credits a 92nd Street Y and its Belfer Center for Innovation and Social Impact with the idea that now issue used to inspire a global movement.

Designated as the Tuesday after Thanksgiving Thursday each year, the date will fall on Tuesday, Dec. 3. While the world is full of plenty of worthy organizations, one University of Chicago Booth School of Business study said donors are often encouraged to give when they can see the result of their dollars improving the local community. Great Nonprofits said that the money even grows when it is donated locally.

“For every $1 donated, the public receives about $3 in benefits,” said a 2021 study on the organization’s website. “Charitable giving has a ripple effect that impacts local economies in communities across the United States.”

If you’re hoping to give a bit back to a charity near and dear to your heart, why not find one that fits the bill in your own back yard? Here are some nonprofits that are a part of your local community.

Based in Horsham Township, this nonprofit coordinates the rescue, care, and adoptions of Siberian Huskey dogs. From financial donations to the lending of time, fostering, or even adoption, area residents can assist in a number of ways on Giving Tuesday.

If animals are your true passion in life, you have another local option called Kitty Junction. This Horsham-based nonprofit seeks to care for kittens and cats by providing medical care, vaccinations, spay/neuter services, and adoption organizations to area felines. The 501(c)(3) is a rescue group that seeks financial donations, sponsors (or fosters) of cats, and even “fur-ever” homes for its housed kitties.

An organization in Hatboro has focused to provide that the lives of those impacted by cancer never feel alone in the fight. Since 1997 Breathing Room Foundation has provided individualized care and support to families affected by cancer by addressing their basic and most critical needs, so that “they can concentrate their efforts on regaining their physical health.” Plenty of ways to give, including donating time or funding, can be found on the website.

Hoping to offer a diverse, safe place for marginalized and vulnerable populations, not to mention driving social change to improve their lives, the mission of the Hatboro-based Welcome Project PA said it envisions “a world in which all people are welcomed just as they are.” The group provides educational resources, support groups, social activities, and events for the LGBTQIA+ community.

It doesn’t get much “closer to home,” than a nonprofit that encourages the excellence of our own public-school students. The group works to “enhance and enrich educational experiences” in the school district with all-volunteer work, as it has since 1987. To date, the nonprofit has impacted thousands of students by “awarding more than 300 Innovative Learning grants totaling more than $1 million” to Hatboro-Horsham teachers and principals.

This list is in no way intended to be the only nonprofits in the local area, but instead is aimed to give you some ideas on how you can become involved in Giving Tuesday right in your own backyard.
